National Stop Loan Sharks week

Today is the start of National Stop Loan Sharks week & we are pleased to be supporting #StopLoanSharksWeek!

This national campaign run by and the Illegal Money Lending Team who investigate and prosecute loan sharks highlights the danger of borrowing from loan sharks.  Partner agencies are posting pictures of staff wearing their loan shark masks – can you guess which member of the FAIRshare team is photo’d in the branch window?

This time of the year can make people particularly vulnerable to loan shark activity.  If you or someone you know has been a victim of a Loan Shark, we urge you to get in touch by calling our 24-hr confidential hotline on 0300 555 2222.  Please spread the word of the risks from illegal money lenders, especially during the run up to Christmas.

This is the second National Stop Loan Sharks week – last year, The Stop Loan Sharks project reached over 2.5 million people via social media with the Stop Loan Sharks message. This is so important in the run up to Christmas when many people are at additional risk of borrowing from illegal lenders.

A loan shark is a moneylender who charges extremely high rates of interest, typically under illegal conditions. The Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) is a specialist agency that prosecutes loan sharks and supports people affected by this crime.

The Stop Loan Sharks Project targets illegal money lenders, more commonly known as loan sharks. The Teams look into illegal lending and any related crimes. For more information on the Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) click here.
